The backward crossover begins with the player establishing the turn with the outside leg on the back third of the inside edge of the blade. The player moves their centre of gravity to the centre of the turn to initiate the turn. As the player comes around on the inside edge, the player takes the inside skate and steps to the inside of the turn placing the skate down on the inside edge in the front third of the blade. The inside leg begins to retract maintaining speed, bring the player around the turn.
As inside skate is pulled back, weight on the blade is transferred from the front third to the back third of the blade and from the inside edge to the outside edge to follow into an under push. The inside leg starting to push under and behind the player's outside leg. The weight on the blade for the under push goes from the back third to the front third on the outside edge of the blade. When the player finishes the under push the player simply steps the inside leg back to the centre of the turn and the stroke repeats.
If the player wanted to change direction in backward crossovers, they would complete the under push, and step out with weight on the back third of the inside edge of the blade. The player's weight shifts towards the inside of the new turn and the inside leg becomes the outside leg. The former outside leg remains to the inside of the body so it can begin the pull and under push.
